Phnom Penh has a brand new 2,000 seater arena and it will be hosting MMA events before the end of the year according to Charles Julliard, the general manager of the Beeline Arena.
“In the Beeline Arena we have a Kun Khmer event every Sunday and one time per month an International Kick Boxing Championship. We have also decided to create the Ultimate Khmer Championship and I’m a member of the production company who will organize the first MMA event in Cambodia.”
According to Julliard there are ambitious plans to host even more stand up fighting events in the first multi-purpose sports arena in Cambodia,
“With TV5 Cambodia, we plan to organize, starting from March 2013, a Kun Khmer Event (Warrior Fighting Night) with the same elimination system as K-1 with a total of eight fighters. At the big final the winner will be the last man standing.”
The Beeline Arena is located on the Chroy Changvar peninsula facing Phnom Penh and Juliard says he has already spoken to representatives from Asia’s biggest MMA organization, ONE Fighting Championship, about the possibility of hosting an event in Cambodia later this year,
“I got a call from ONE FC yesterday to organize a ONE FC event in our Arena between May to September 2013. MMA is growing up in Cambodia!”
In other related news the Phnom Penh Post revealed today that ONE FC had signed a TV deal with MyTV in Cambodia which will see future events broadcast live on terrestrial TV. Bernard Anthony the general manager of Cambodian Broadcast Service (CBS), the company which also controls the Cambodian Television Network (CTN) and Cambodian News Channel, spoke enthusiastically about the potential which MMA has for growth in Cambodia.
“CTN and MyTV has always been at the forefront in bringing the best entertainment to the people of Cambodia and as MMA has gained a huge following around the world, we expect it do well here.”
